Rauschpfeifen are instruments with a double reed (like the krumhorn and cornamuse) with a very powerful sound, which will project well in an outdoor environment. The name comes from the German rausch (noise) or rusch (reed).

They are windcap instruments with a wide conical bore similar to a shawm, that allows them to be overblown at the octave to give them a range of an octave and a fifth..

Like the rest of the early reed instruments, the rauschpfeife could only play chromatic tones outside the fundamental scale by using cross-fingerings. This weakens the sound of some tones and produces rather unsteady results when played by less experienced performers.

This instrument is made from the finest English sycamore and is presented with a cane reed, a reed care and maintenance leaflet and fingering chart in an attractive padded sleeve.

Each instrument is hand built to special order by in house craftsmen in our own workshops in Toledo (Spain) and comes with 12 months warranty.

Rauschpfeife Kit
The same instrument is offered in kit form for home assembly. The Rauschpfeife 'Weekender' kit is included in a new series of kits which have been designed for ease of assembly, practicality and economy. Most importantly they are enjoyable to build and can be finished, as the name implies, in two or three days.

One of the simplest kits to build our Rauschpfeife kit comprises just two main components, a windcap and straight stem, accurately turned in English sycamore ready for assembly.

The kit also includes all the hardware parts, cork strip, etc, together with a template and a set of drills to ensure accurate tuning.

The price includes the license to build one instrument for private use.

Full instructions in a clear and concise manner and a working template ensure success even for the first time builder.
