No sordunes have survived to the present day but detailed drawings can be found in Praetorius' "Syntagma Musicum" (1619) which clearly show a double reed instrument of two parallel bores with a crook (bocal) tapering towards the end of its length.

The finished instruments can be played expressively and sound particularly fine as a low consort, having a tone similar to the curtal or dulcian but are more muted.

RWC Sordune
Our workshop has developed their sordunes after the drawings found in Praetorius' "Syntagma Musicum".

Drawn to scale using the Brunswick foot we were able to convert the measurements into metric and calculate the bore diameters from the playing length and pitch indicated.

We make the body of the instrument from English sycamore, which is then bored and sealed to prevent moisture penetration.

A short straight crook is hand drawn in brass and tapered at one end to suit the double cane reed.

Each instrument is presented in a fitted hard case and comes with a cane reed, fingering chart and 12 months warranty.

We have used the bottom note to name the sizes of Sordune but some conventions prefer the lowest note of the main 7 finger playing range (hence the second voice in brackets).

Bass: F-d'

Great Bass: FF-d'

Quart Bass: BBb-g'

Tenor: Bb-g'

Each instrument is entirely hand built to special order by in house craftsmen in our own workshops in Toledo (Spain) and comes with 12 months warranty.
